City Buses. The Charlottesville Transit Service (CTS) provides bus transportation around Charlottesville. Any UVA student may “transfer” from a UTS bus on the CTS buses for free. Taxis. These provide a private car ride to anywhere in Charlottesville, and are a more expensive means of transportation – see Yellow Pages under “Taxicabs”. Call in advance to check fares and/or order a service. A tip of 15% for the driver is expected.
Hitchhiking. Do not hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers in your vehicle. It can be very dangerous, and it is illegal in Virginia.
Air Transportation. The Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) is located north of UVA grounds, on Airport Road (Tel: 973-8342). Larger airports nearest to Charlottesville are Richmond International (RIC) and Washington Dulles (IAD).
Bus Transportation. Greyhound runs bus services from its station on Main Street between the Amtrak station and the Downtown Mall to Washington Dulles Airport and to other cities.
Rail Transportation. Amtrak runs train services from the station located at 810 West Main Street between New York and New Orleans twice a day, and between Washington, D.C. and Chicago six times a week. Taking the train is generally more expensive than using Greyhound bus service and runs the risk of longer delays. However, service and comfort are better. Car Rental.
